Thanks a lot for the websites. They are really helpful.
But I still have a doubt. What should we use instead of madam if she is not married and we don t know her name??

It doesn t matter if she s married or not. It s a standard for formal letters and it is exactly what you use if you don t know her name: Dear Sir or Madam
If you know the person s name you re writing to, you use their name: Dear Mr (mister) Smith, Dear Mrs (If you know the woman is married) Smith, Dear Miss (If you know the woman isn t married) Smith, Dear Ms (if you don t know or don t want to state if she is married or not) Smith,
Am I right? Opinions? Sophia |

But, Pretty3, how often would you know her sex without knowing her name? Anyway, Sophia is correct about the standard openings, except for periods. It is "Mr." and "Mrs.", since they are abbreviations of Mister and Mistress (but pronounced "missus"). Now, originally, "Ms" was written without a period, because it isn t an abbreviation (It s just a smushing together of Miss and Mrs.). However, almost everyone writes it with a period now, because its origins have pretty much been forgotten or ignored. Bruce |

May be I phone her before sending the letter and I forget to ask about her name ;)))
Bth, I asked that question because in our cultur it is not nice to call any woman madam and you are not sure if she is not married.
