Have you got...? vs Do you have...?

Hello!

Can anyone tell me what s the difference between making a question with "Have you got...?" and "Do you have...?"?

For example, would you say:

"Have you got a dog?" or "Do you have a dog?

And why? I think they are both correct, but I really don t know the difference and which one is more "correct" to teach to students.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hugs,
Patricia

The difference is that one (have got/ has got) is British English while  Do you have .... is American English.    Both are correct!

This really annoys me because it s confusing for beginners. Have/has got is so much better! Wink
