I have never heard the expression.
The only thing I can think of is they are referring to "spitting on a baseball" A spitball in baseball, is where the ball has been manipulated by applying spit or some kind of lubricant to it. Throwing spitballs is an illegal thign in baseball.
Maybe to "spit on a baseball" means to cheat.
Just a thought, I have never heard the term before. |

I �m not sure if it �s used in an idiomatic sense, but I remember reading an article about how baseball players are the most superstitious athletes, and spitting on the baseball bat is one of many superstitions. |
