recess/ break

recess/ break

The question might be a bit silly and really simple but I have to ask it.

What do you say when a teacher who is on recess duty announces that a recess/ break is over and they want students go back to their classes?

Does the phrase: The break/ recess is over make any sense?

Thanks for replying to my question ueslteacher but the thing is that the school I teach in is a very small one and we don t have the bell ringing for the break !

Jarek2011,

"Thank you, students.  The Break is over."

"Thank you, students.  The Recess is over."

Yes, the two sentences make sense.  They both sound fine to me.

Dear Mariethe,

"A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language", R. Quirk, et al, page 277, shows:

"During (the) break/recess".  (The authors contend that the word "the" is an optional part of the phrase, and can be used, or not used, as the Speaker chooses).

"Thank you, students.  The Break is over."
"Thank you, students.  Break is over."
"Thank you, students.  The Recess is over."
"Thank you, students.  Recess is over."

According to the authors, it seems that these types of phrases are both acceptable.

Thank you, Mariethe, for bringing this to my attention.

Les
