It would be a good idea to take a first aid kit with you. Youd be unwise to go without taking a first aid kit. Its a real shame she didnt manage to pass her exams. She didnt manage to pass her exams, unfortunately. Id rather you didnt tell your mother about us. I would prefer that you say nothing. In my opinion they should tell me the truth. Its high time they told me the truth. I would prefer you not to speak so quickly. Id rather you didnt speak so quickly.
The difference is in the way the words are used. This might help with the explanation.

1) Youd better take a first aid kit.
2)She didnt manage to pass her exams, which is a real shame.
3)Its high time they told me the truth.
4)Id rather /Id sooner you didnt speak so quickly.
WOULD RATHER + BARE INFINITIVE. "Id rather watch TV" ( would sooner is the same)
WOULD PREFER + FULL INFINITIVE. " Id prefer to watch TV" |

Thanks a lot for all your answers. As for the second sentence, the answer i was looking for is mariecs one. Regarding would rather and would prefer, i thought the thing was as mariec again, says, but sometimes the sentences are transformed in diffferent ways as some of you have done. So, I still dont understand the difference.
