Sunday Challenge

Hello, dear colleagues,
I wonder if you could give me a hand with this question:

The higher the price you paid, the better....get.

a) quality you ll      b) quality you must

c) the quality you would      d) quality you would

The question is from a university entrance test and I think it is a bit tricky, again Confused . BTW, I posted some of the questions here several weeks ago, and few of them had not been correctly made by the university (as some native speakers concluded in the forum). Thats why I am asking cause I feel something is wrong with it.
Have a nice Sunday and I hope it wont be spoiled by this question. Wink

I think the right anwer is d) because the verb in the first sentence is in the past .
If it were The higher the price you pay, the better....get. then the correct answer would be a)
Hope it helps

The choices did seem tricky at first. The correct answer is:

c)  The higher the price you paid, the better the quality you would get.

And another correct form (not given, but more commonly heard perhaps? a report in the simple past) is:

c) The higher the price you paid, the better the quality you got.

BTW: The correct answer was the only one with the

Yes, it s d) but it sounds really awkward. Or should it be c)? Yes, c)

You are right ohermann, these ain t easy and I m an educated native speaker! To really make sense of this, it would  be better to say The higher the price you paid, the better the quality you got. That got still maintains the idea of continuous/ ongoing action.

I must have been posting at the same time as Apodo, glad we agree!

d) is the only correct option.

I agree with "c", although it is not a sentence that anyone would actually say. It seems to me that the whole sentence is subjunctive rather than simple past. Those who say the answer is "d" are missing the importance of "the".

On second thought I agree with those who say c) because the makes the difference.
