The definite article "the" can either be used or omitted with seasons after the preposition in. Depends on whether you teach British English or American English. Either way both are correct.

With winter ,summer,spring,autumn.and New Year we can often use either the or zero article.
Ex:In( the )summer l try to spend as much time in the garden as l can.

We use the when it is understood which summer,spring etc.we mean:

´when are young going to university? ´. ´ln the autumn.(=next autumn)
