Hello fellow teachers, I am preparing a worksheet on collocations for a student and I ve stumbled upon one which is giving me a hard time ;I can t figure it out.Maybe I am just too tired ...I am really out of ideas. Here it is:
1.A..............has long legs and a small triangular body. 2.........apples are usually eaten by animals. 3.He used to .............all day-nobody likes people who keep complaining,do they?

I d go with almaz - crab fits them all.
Although I haven t actually seen it used as a verb, usually an adjective crabby . |

I haven t heard it used as a verb either although it gives "to crab" as an informal verb which means to find fault/to grumble.

Well, I think it s a perfectly acceptable verb - formal or informal - which may be an alteration or back-formation of the Scots crabbit, N.Eng crabbed. (meaning grouchy, cantankerous, carnaptious). |

Other adjectives meaning something similar: tetchy, narky. Carnaptious??? Never heard that before! |

Carnaptious? One of my favourite words - so expressive in its cromulence, dont you think?
