THE TEAM is a singular noun (an īit ī), therefore THE TEAM IS PRACTISING. |

In your sentence you use the word team as a whole, so it should be "is". However, Later you discuss the players in different clause. |

I agree with Koala; you can use is if you intend to talk about the team as a group, but you use are if you intend to talk about it collectively.
