beauty is important, but "_________" is crucial.

In Brazil there is an expression.. We usually say that: beauty is  important, but "content" is crucial.

Content for me in english doesn t make sense. I want to mean that the person is nice, has a good conversation, is intelligent ...

Can someone help with the word for this?

"your deep inside" ?
"your true personality" ?
"your true mind" ?

Can t your sentence be the same as : "What you can see is important but what you cannot is more" ?

I think the word you re looking for is "substance."

Beauty is only skin deep. It s what s on the inside that counts.

ha ha manonski LOL! Like it. The real saying is beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think the phrase Apodo gives embodies the meaning - Beauty is only skin deep..... and everyone knows it.

What about "inner beauty"? There is an idiom "inner man" that means
1. a man s mind, soul, or nature
2. Jocular the stomach or appetite

I like Apodo s answer best, since "what s inside" means "content". These are actually two separate sayings that work well together (like chocolate and peanut butter).
