A pupil wrote:
I feel scared walking home at late night.
What is the best way to explain why this is wrong?

I think the problem is that the preposition at belongs with night , it makes a stock phrase - at night, in the same way as in the morning, in the afternoon etc. Late can be added to each of these to be Late at night, late in the morning, late in the afternoon. |

Ibululu, you are marvellous.
I explained it that way - at night, in the evening - but my pupil kept saying why, why, why because late is an adjective . I could not locate any formal reference to an explanation. I am happy to see that everyone likes this explanation because that is what I used and I used Paul Simon s song Late in the evening as the example of how to remember it. |
