You can use "quake". As in "earth was quaking".

Even though it ´s called an earthquake, it sounds very natural to say "The earth was shaking". Since "quake" is not commonly used in English, "shaking" would be more common. Bruce |

Ask the people in Christchurch, New Zealand and they would say that the earth was definitely shaking. |
