Using L1 in L2 Classes? Whatīs your opinion?

Hi mates.

1.Do you think itīs necessary  or useful to use L1 in a L2 class?

2.Should teachers be allowed to use L1 in L2 class?

Thanks in advanced for your comments!Wink

1. Yes, it can be a useful tool. If we have beginners, we try to buddy them up with a more advanced student who has the same language. It can save the teacher a lot of time, and it īs good for the buddy to hear the topic matter in English, then translate it into his L1. It can only support learning. Obviously - and you, the teacher, has to make a call, if kids are just chatting in L1, then, no that īs not good.

2. Absolutely! But not too much, a good teacher shouldn īt need to, but sometimes it can be comforting for the student.

I agree with cunliffe. It is sometimes necessary so as not to make our students feel frustrated but it should only be used if it is really necessary.

Hi dearest
I think using l1 is the last way
you can use realia, authentic materials, pictures, acting or telling what you want through a sentence or a story
But remember, the last way is l1 .students have to think in l2
