to have knowledge on / of

Hello dear colleagues

I have a little question regarding a cover letter. On the net I found the expression "I have knowledge on both hardware and software technology", but "to have knowledge on sounds a bit weird to my ears. Is that a special form somehow or is it just a typo and it should be "I have knowledge of"?

Thanks a lot for your help :)
Hugs
Sara

I think:

It s usually knowledge of but some NSs use knowledge on interchangeably

EX: I have a lot of knowledge of fishing   I have a lot of knowledge on fishing

In some cases knowledge on is possible where of is not

EX: Fishing? I have a lot of knowledge on that subject

Maybe I m wrong though. Wait for a NS.

Hi there Sara Mariam,

I m a native speaker and in this case I would say "knowledge of," not "knowledge on." Alternatively I might use, "I am knowledgeable about both H and S technology."

However, "I am familiar with both..." or "I have experience with both..." sounds more natural to me.

Hope this helps

Yes, I thought so. Funny that they make such mistakes on websites that have sample cover letters  .. so I thought maybe it s me who just didn t know about this possibility.
Thanks a lot for all your help! You are great :)

Beware of websites!  They re not always written by native speakers.

I agree with Julia on this one.

Have a nice day Sara Mariam (and everyone else, of course!)

Yes, Janet, I saw quite some cover letter example that had mistakes. If they do that on purpose? ;) :p
