any Elvis fans out there?

I worked on present proggressive with my 6th graders and just now spent a few lessons on the difference between present simple (which they learned before) and present progressive.
At this moment I think they are seriously confused ☺. The next text in our book is about Elvis Presley. (it actually introduces imperatives).
I would love to do an Elvis song to complement the reading and ideally it would review some present simple vs progressive....
Are there any Elvis fans among you who can give me an idea as to which song to choose? |

"In The Ghetto"
As the snow flies On a cold and gray Chicago mornin A poor little baby child is born In the ghetto And his mama cries cause if theres one thing that she dont need its another hungry mouth to feed In the ghetto
People, dont you understand the child needs a helping hand or hell grow to be an angry young man some day Take a look at you and me, are we too blind to see, do we simply turn our heads and look the other way
Well the world turns and a hungry little boy with a runny nose plays in the street as the cold wind blows In the ghetto
And his hunger burns so he starts to roam the streets at night and he learns how to steal and he learns how to fight In the ghetto
Then one night in desperation a young man breaks away He buys a gun, steals a car, tries to run, but he dont get far And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers round an angry young man face down on the street with a gun in his hand In the ghetto
As her young man dies, on a cold and gray Chicago mornin, another little baby child is born In the ghetto
Well this is my favorite song for the simple present. "This Is The Story"
I play the song, it was our own Your photographs by my side I know I cant forget you So I dont even try
The note you left is in my hand I read again what you say Youre sorry but you love him And youve both gone away
This is the story of a man Whose world has fallen apart And its the story That is breaking my heart
An open fire, our favorite chair I get a book from the shelf But the words I am reading Could apply to myself
This is the story of a man Whose world has fallen apart And its the story That is breaking my heart Yes, its the story that is breaking my heart Yes, its the story that is breaking my heart Yes, its the story that is breaking my heart I dont actually this one but... "Riding The Rainbow"
Im riding the rainbow Hitting the highway to happiness Oh yes, Im looking to find someone Whose meant to be mine
Im living to love and loving to live Ive got a heart, Im longing to give Im riding the rainbow Ill follow that star to where you are
Im riding the rainbow Heading for heaven and happiness I guess somebody somewhere Someday will teach me to care
But being alone Dont bother me Im free to have fun Its fun to be free
Im riding the rainbow Ill follow that star Im riding the rainbow To where you are And heres the 3rd for progressive present

In the Ghetto is my favourite Elvis song - you can get some ESL ideas from here
Theres a nice short video here that teaches about present cont. while waiting for Elvis in a street parade. The video, only uploaded in June this year, is quaint. It contains revision points in the last half.
Cheers

"Burning love" has a good mix of the tenses you are referring to.
Another possibility is "Black Velvet" by Alannah Miles (it tells the story of Elvis) |

Douglas, I never realized black velvet was about Elvis, only now when I read the lyrics. unfortunately it is a bit too hard for my students. Burning love might work as well, it indeed has a good review of the tenses.
In the ghetto is indeed a great song, also one of the only ones I really knew the lyrics for even before I started checking inot songs. Might be good to show them Elvis also did some more serious stuff, I remember I was very touched by the lyrics when I was a young teenager...might work for them as well... I ll look into the ideas you suggested Jayho.
Thank you all for your suggesztions, i ll check them all... |
