Well, Janet - or can I call you Jinty- , that�s definitely a traditional Scots English New Year toast (lit. �long may your chimney smoke�), as is my personal favourite:
Mey the moose neer lea yer girnal wi the tear-drap in its ee. (May the mouse never leave your grain-store with a tear in its eye.)

My father always called me "Jinny" !!! He was from Banknock, by Bonnybridge in Stirlingshire and I spent all my summer holidays there when I was a child visiting my grandmother who, incidentally, died at the ripe old age of 101 ! And, yes, she DID receive a telegram from the Queen! Even after 60 years in the south of England, where I was born, my father still had his lovely Scottish accent! He always celebrated "Hogmanay" on the 31st December. Janet Och aye the noo! |
