LCM is "least common multiple," which is similar to "least common denominator." It is the smallest whole number that can divide two other numbers.
HCF is "highest common factor," which is usually called (in America, at least) "greatest common divisor." It is the largest whole number that can divide two other numbers.

mvblair may have made a little mistake in writing the answer. The LCM is the smallest whole number that the two given numbers can evenly divide, not that can divide the two numbers. THe LCM of 12 and 15 is 60, because they will both go into 60 evenly, but not into any smaller number. Bruce |
