b Were the award to be given to someone from this department, the management might be accused of favoritism. This is a very formal construction, which is rarely used, in which the word "if" is removed. A more common wording would be "If the award were (but "was" would be much more common now) given to someone from this department, the management might be accused of favoritism". Bruce |
