There is + plurals? Help, please!

Hi!
Is this sentence correct?

There s a carpert and three boxes on the floor.

Because the verb agrees with its nearest complement.

Or can you also say:

There are a carpet and three boxes on the floor?

Thx for your help! Star

There s a carpet and three boxes on the floor .  It agrees with the nearest object, unless you reverse the word order, as in Three boxes and a carpet are on the floor.

So,can we write a sentence like this :
There is a cat,a dog and 2 people.(when describing a picture)
or should we use :there are a cat,a dog and 2 people.

I have a doubt.:))

Offended? I hope - never! People on eslp love this bit of ribbing and I have no doubt about that.

How funny! I have no doubt is fine, but I have a doubt , as we have seen, is very suspect...

The English language, eh???
