Give a question for the underlined words:
"She started focusing on this idea."
And my question is: Is it absolutely necessary to include on in the question or not?
Thanks a lot, Ana |

Yes, on is necessary in this sentence. For the question, it depends on the context. The most natural-sounding question is "What did she start focusing on?" However, to appease the grammar police in formal settings, I would use "On what did she start focusing?" Supposedly you shouldn t end a sentence with a preposition. Never mind that the second answer sounds pretentious and unnatural. |

First of all, thanks.
Second, there is no context, it s just a grammatical exercise in "Selectividad". The students are requested to give a question, that s all.
They should always include on in the question, beginning or end, is that right?

Actually, the on is necessary because of focus , but not because it s a question. In fact, on this idea is a phrase which can come at the beginning or end:
On this idea, she started focusing. OR She started focusing on this idea.
