SAME TO YOU
|
Hi there!
What s the best way to return someone s good wishes?
A) - Have a nice weekend!
B) - Thanks! (The) same to you.
A) - Have a nice weekend!
B) - Thanks! Likewise! (?????)
Does likewise sound natural here? Is it correct?
Thanks in advance

How about: Thanks! You too!
From the 2 choices I d say "Likewise".
I wouldn t say "same to you"

Thanks! You too. Or Thanks! And you.
Likewise and same to you - no! |

You can use both (also "and you" and "you too"). "Same to you" can be used as well, although "The same to you" is more commond. I have a native speaker from London with me right now and she said she would say "the same to you" I guess it depends on how well you know the person you are talking to!

We often use "the same to you" as the response to a negative statement.
A: I hope you die!
B: The same to you!

I always say "Yes, you too" - it s just a rote response really, no thought involved
Not sure I agree with you on "same to you" Lynn & Bruce. If someone wishes me a good holiday (like the mid-semester break) I do often say "same to you". Some people do also use this with the good weekend scenario. Same to you is wishing back the same thing in both positive and negative expressions but the way it is expressed is different.

I agree with Jayho.
Although I haven t lived in the UK for several years in the area that I come from we would use (The) same to you in either a positive or a negative context.
Of course a simple You, too works, too.
