A lot of people were standing... is correct.
You can t say "A lot of people was..." because people is a plural noun. And according to the rules, many is used mainly in questions and negative sentences. In affirmative sentences it is not so common, and we generally use expressions like lots of, a lot of and plenty of. This leaves the third option out. Have a nice Sunday. Svetlana.

I would love to have a native answer;
As for me, a lot of/lots of/plenty of are preferred in affirmative sentences in conversational or informal style more often and many/much are used in written or formal style.
