There is or there are

There is a boy and a girl in the classroom.
                          OR
There are a boy and a girl in the classroom.

There is a boy and a girl in the classroom.

BUT There are 2 children in the classroom/

The choice of is/are depends on the  of the first word after the construction with there.

If it is singular ( a.../one..) - use is.is.

If it is plural (Ns) -  use are

I think it should be "there are" as the following subject (boy and girl) is plural, but may be the native speakers would prefer the singular "is" or say it s the more common. Looking forward to their reply.

Yes, there is. The full sentence would be: There is a boy and there is a girl in the classroom. But as English speakers are like the rest of us, a bit lazy, we leave out the second there is . So we d say "There is a boy (singular) and a girl in the classroom." Hope this helps. Cheers, Peter.

I now strongly agree with all the replies above, except mine.

When 2 nouns are divided by AND - they are treated as two singular entities -
therefore the answer is:

there is a boy and a girl.

I can agree with you all with "There is a boy and a girl". But please  help me know which sentence is grammatically correct here.

A boy and a girl is in the classroom OR

A boy and a girl are in the classroom.

Please reply me soon.

Yes, if you have the articles an or a you have to use singular, there is.

Correct me if I m wrong:

A sentence that begins with there is called an INVERTED SENTENCE wherein the subject is not at the beginning of the sentence.   A boy and a girl is a compound subject, and therefore plural and should be followed by are

A boy and a girl are (THERE) in the classroom.
There are a boy and a girl in the classroom.   INVERTED (but means the same)

Unless the compound subject refers to one thing or one person like coffee and cream or my lover and friend, the verb that follows must be are.
