Non defining relative clauses
|
Dear Collages, I really need your help. I have doubs about if I have to put comas or not in these sentences. I mean , if they are define or non defining. Can you help me?
1)The town where I grew up is very small.
2) The sweater that john bought me is too small
3) The subject that I m studying is too difficult.
4)The shop that is near my house has beautiful clothes
5 The country which I want to visit most is France
Thanks in advance!!

None of those sentences is non-defining, so there are no comas.
Anyway, "that" cannot be used in defining relative clauses, so in case sentences 2-4 were non-defining (which they re not) the would take "which" instead of "that".
A non-defining relative clause gives extra information about the antecedent but doesn t limit its application. In the examples you give we need the relative clause to identify what town, sweater, subject... we are referring to, that s why they are defining.
I hope it helps
