Deaf students

evenin all,

I have a bit of a problem :  I ll be teaching two deaf kids next year... (who are schooled in a regular school) They can hear some but mostly sign or code in french sign language (LSF or LPC)
I can get by in sign language however... and here is where it gets complicated, I will be teaching them English as a second language and  their "coder" (the person who translates for them in class in sign language) does not know BSL (British sign language)
Now my question  is as follows: How can I learn BSL super quick????Ermm
If I can t sign in English there is no point!
The headmaster at school doesn t seem to understand my point:If the coder is in the classroom she will translate into French sign language what I am trying to convey in English... It won t be a foreign language for the kids!
I don t know if what I am writing is clear enough, but I am a bit nervous as there are only two months left! help!!!!
If you have any ideas... even a bit of compassion!!!Smile
have a good evening

I never had to deal with the same problem as you but I hope you ll find a solution.

To all the ESLprintables members: No one offering a super quick BSL learning course over the summer holidays?

Does it have to be BSL? American Sign Language (ASL) was developed from French Sign Language and might be a lot easier for you or your coder to pick up.

thanks MoodyMoody, that would be an option.
I ll know today the extent of handicap those kids have but apparently at least one of them uses LPC which is the equivalent of cued english...(easy to learn!!)
I ll keep you posted
have a good day
