Is it the acceptable form of spoken/written English to say such things :

a) Academic-wise, he�s performing well.

b) Economics-wise, the nation is doing well.

If yes, is there a hyphen ( -) before the wise?

No , you wouldn �t use �wise � with these words. You should say:
Academically, he �s performing well.
Economically, the nation is doing well.

You can use them in a VERY informal setting, almost a humorous usage. Otherwise, johanne23232 is definitely correct.
