I remember having a "teddy bear" even though it wasn�t a bear.

Definately "stuffed animal" is most common (and sounds the best), because it is not always an animal "stuffed toy" can also be used.
"Teddy bear" is supposed to be a bear (some say it is named after US President Teddy Roosevelt).
Beware of using "teddy"; it can also mean a piece of women�s lingerie.

Well, I�ve heard all of the following in regular use:
plush toy
cuddly toy
stuffed toy
soft toy
teddy bear
bunny/teddy/ted/puss or pretty much anything else ending in �ie� or �y� or other diminutive for the type of animal
