My family has 8 people. / There are 8 people in my family.

My family has 8 people.
OR
There are 8 people in my family.

How do i explain to my students that "there are 8 people in my family." is the most appropriate way to express although "my family has 8 people" is also grammatically correct?

THANKS!

grammatically correct but rare.. I would either say There are 8 people in my family or My family consists of 8 members.

has or has got implies  that we have to do with possessing. Family cannot possess people, people  are  just a part of a family. I hope  my explanation is helpful.
