do or take?

Hi,
Can you tell me what the correct completion is in the following sentence:
- Good luck in your exam. When are you going to ( do - make ) the exam?
Regards :)

Hello, it is TAKE the exam. You wrote the wrong options ( do - make ) the exam? Cheers! |

Take or sit are better, but I have heard students say they are having or doing an exam.In Br Eng, you could also say, when have you got your exam? |

In American English, it s take the exam. I ve never heard sit an exam or test; that must be British English. Students dont make exams; thats the teachers job! |

@MoodyMoody,
In the US, some people say "sit for an exam" (but never "sit an exam"), especially if it is a professional exam (like the CPA exam), rather than one in school.

In British English, we often say sit an exam.

Bruce, I sit corrected! I guess "sit [for] an exam" never made it to my dialect of American English. (I m from North Carolina, and you re from California if I remember correctly? Although your picture looks more like Wisconsin or Minnesota.) |

I ve never heard anyone say good luck in your exams - but on/with your exams!

Sit an exam - very standard in Br Eng, as is good luck in your exams. With is OK, but not on. In Italian, in that situation, we don t wish good luck, btw; we say in bocca al lupo! Just thought you might like to know. |
