English Cultural lessons

Hi,

I was just wondering how many of you teach cultural English as well as language.

It was a separate topic in my old school  (taught in English) but the focus was to learn about traditions, hitory, customs etc.

I created the whole course when I taught this and thought that if there were people interested I would copy it from my exercise book and make worksheets for you  (may take a bit of time :-)   ).

Please let me know what you think.

I already uploaded the test for the end of the year which I can see has been downloaded a few times. If you have a look at this you would get an idea of things we covered.

To view the test type search my printables.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Tracey

I think that would be a great idea.  In the UK, it is a necessity to teach culture as well as language to our students as many of them require this in order to satisfy visa requirements or to apply for British Citizenship.

Hi Tracy,

Its a great idea actually. I teach adult learners as well and I introduced cultural English as well though mostly used what I found on the net. It would be great if you had some material to share.

Personally, I see teaching the culture as part of teaching the language (try explaining to your students what a "redneck" is).

Like Douglas said culture is a part of teaching the language. In a first year I always start with reading/watching/ICT exercices on the UK, Ireland,.. food before starting with the language.
Thats why I made some worksheets concerning these topics. Youll find them on this site. One is for elementary level, the other one for a intermediate level..
