Victorian children

Hello everybody
You know that in the Victorian age, children have a strict discipline. there is a saying which is " children should be seen and not heard". It s hardly explained . Can you explain what it means, please?I would be grateful for your reply.
Thanks in advance
Hussam

People at that time thought that children had nothing to contribute to adult conversation, and were seen as an interruption, so they should be seen and not heard.

I hope this helps.

To my way of thinking it  refers to children s behaviour. They should be seen not herd meaning they should be polite and behave well, not run around shouting, screaming and laughing loudly for instance.

Hi, Wealthy Victorian Children rarely communicated with their parents except for a specified time each day.
