Both are correct, but I teach my students the " were " option and at higher levels I tell them that the " was " option is also possible., but mainly used in spoken langua.
It�s the same when we start explaining our students teh use of " some". We always tell them that it�s used for affirmative and years later we start telling them that it can also be used in interrogatives.

�If I were � is the subjunctive and therefore is why you find it in conditional sentences.  It �s one of the few times the subjunctive is still used in English.
�If I were � is the more common usage.
