Ataraxia was prevalent in 19th century Britain, especially in northern industrial areas. It was a disease of the mouth with the main symptoms being toxic breath and a blackening of the teeth and gums and attacked mostly young boys. The condition began to die out with the introduction of bubble gum in the early 20th century. It s a compound word formed from Ah! Tar (coal tar) and Axia (disease or condition) and was caused by the chewing of coal tar,
which was then used to seal paved roads. |

ataraxia is not a disease, it s a name of a remedy introduced by ancient Egyptians to cure women of the royal family suffering from irritability. the drug
was actually a valuable atar (essential oil or perfume obtained from flowers) . The word ataraxia is made up from atar+ axia ( from the Greek word axios meaning worthy)

After their very popular second album Abraxas (1970), Santana attempted to ride the wave of success of their latin-rock fusion music with the very dissapointing, albeit very calming, third album, Ataraxia (1972). |

Ataraxia actually enshrines the memory of Ata-Malek Juvayni, a prominent Persian historian. He is credited with saving many racks (phonemically spelled rax) of books during the Mongol conquest of the city of Alamut in 1256 CE. So, ataraxia is the saving of books, especially rare and precious ones, from those who would destroy them and deprive the world of their calming effect. |
