As an American, I would say the answer in plural.
What is your favorite animal?
e.g. My favorite animals are cats. / Cats are my favorite animals. |

I m a new member and I have a similar question: when we ask "What s your favourite food?" , what s the answer if we talk about plural nouns? (e.g. eggs, spaghetti, vegetables)? Thank you |

Well in my opinion you could say My favourite animal is the cat and my favorite animals are cats. Is the first sentence correct? Is there a native speaker who could help ? |
