We can also  say
Inspite of telling me to give up the work I refused his words

Or despite him telling me to give up (the) work, I ignored him.

In spite of being told to give up the work, I refused it or I ignored him
This sounds more natural and grammatically speaking it is non redundant

We wouldn t say refused his words

You could also say I refused to listen

If you want to stick with "words" you could say: I didn t heed his words.
I have never heard the expression "I refused his words", could it be a direct translation from your language?
