Turtle or tortoise?
|
Hello dear colleagues,My next topic with a class of young learners is Turtles. I am aware that a turtle is a reptile that lives mostly in water and a tortoise lives on land. I will explain the difference to the kids in my class. However in stories and some websites that I m planning to use, tortoises often are called turtles.
My question is to native speakers. Is it common to call tortoises turtles in your country? I mean not in class but just in informal talks about these creatures? Especially as pets?
Thank you

Hi, Izulia, In the US, we hardly ever use the word tortoise, except when speaking scientifically. Most of us don t even know the difference very clearly. But Aesop s fable is always called "The Tortoise and the Hare". Bruce |
