It s a past participle being used as an adjective.

My heart is broken.
Dinner is served.

In this case, I agree with Bruce, but this is also the form of the passive. If the sentence were "XXXX was buried at XXXXX," then the sentence is passive instead.

I think it is not a participle adj, rather it is a passive form.

e.g.

active: "he has buried the box in the back garden."
passive: " the box is buried in the back garden."

I agree with Bruce and MoodyMoody. @ironik - wouldn t it have to be the box has been buried by him to be passive? As it stands the box is buried , - buried is being used as an adjective.

Thanks

At first I thought Simple present passive whereby the agent has been dropped but that doesn t make sense:

XXXX is buried at XXXXXX (by XXXXX) = wrong
because it should be XXXXXXX was buried at XXXXXX by XXXX

So that ruled out the passive.

Then I thought past participle used as an adjective.

Then I became confused and required clarification. I read some similar topics here but it wasnt clear.  There was much debate.

I will go with past participle used as an adjective and explain it that way.

Thanks 4 your quick replies.

Why?????
I think "is buried" is also possible! For example:Every member of this familly is buried at....."
Am I wrong?

Hi everybody!

The sentence "XXXX is buried at XXXXXX." is in passive voice, but in present. Let s put the sentence in this way:

The box is buried at the garden.

So, to prove that it is in the passive voice, we should rewrite it into the active voice, so it would be:

"Someboy buries the box at the garden"  Present simple tense

And if the sentence is "The box was buried at the garden" so, the active voice would be:

"Somebody buried the box at hte garden" but this time in Past Simple tense.

Best Regards

@Julia
Yes, "is buried" is possible, but in that case, "buried" is being used as an adjective.

The shirt is blue.
The box is buried.

Edit:
Also, "is buried" could be passive, but isnt in this case. Here is the difference:
Their school bus is met every day by their loving dog. This is passive, because it is an action. The dog meets the bus every day.
The box is buried in the yard. This is not passive, because it is a description of the box, not an action.
A golden egg is buried on the grounds every year before the big Easter egg hunt. This is passive, because it is an action. Notice that the present passive needs a time frame.
