This question in the text book makes me confused:
There is ( much - a lot of ) beautiful scenery.
The answer is a lot of .
Can you explain why ??
I thought the answer is much
What do you think ?

I would use a lot of. It sounds correct, more natural, and is what a native speaker would say. |

As Aswan explained, we use �a lot of � or �lots of � for positive or affirmative sentences. It replaces much and many, so to speak. We usually use much and many for negative and interrogative sentences. Usually, as modern (teenage style) english uses the latter two in positive sentences too. But for the older ears, this sounds rather unnaturally. Cheers, Peter. |

"Much" isn �t incorrect - just not the usual modern usage. It makes the sentence sound very formal. Bruce |
