Hello dear helpful teachers,
Next week I m going to start teaching English to a 6year old boy who doesn t know English at all. Could you please give me some advice regarding how I can teach and what material or websites I can use? I would like to teach daily English using games and songs. I have never taught a child that young before. So I am looking forward to seeing your any advice.
Mustafa
Thanks in advance |

Hello there ;-)
Today I just answered the similar post to Lilikar. I dont`t want to sound like a parrot, I just want recommend what I know really well and use almost on daily basis teaching English to my own kids. I suggest the resources : stories that go with songs and flashcards and games. These are the links to see http://www.teachingenglishgames.com/esl-short-stories
http://www.teachingenglishgames.com/3-5/preschoolstories.htm
http://www.teachingenglishgames.com/eslstory.htm
To be accurate- the stories contain vocabulary useful in every day life.
And here you can find some suggestions and games for one to one teaching http://www.homeenglishteacher.com/
I hope this helps a bit and you won`t call me a parrot.

You need a lot of words and action. Make sure they can easily see and understand the words you are teaching them. Do not worry so much about abc and 123 as you may be thinking. Star with some easy to understand action words and grind those so you are sure they remember them and can come back a week later and fully understand. "jump" "swim" "run"
Play a lot of games, make it fun. |

As you say, you need plenty of songs and games to make it fun. I would also suggest some stories, such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?", by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle, and "Where s Spot?", by Eric Hill. Kids love to lift the flaps to see what s hiding behind. ;)
Make lots of gestures with the songs, to make it funnier (the silliest, the best!), and lots of movement. It helps kids to memorize the words. Some routines are also good, for example, to have a "hello" song to begin the lesson and a "goodbye" song to end it. (I have some, if you like it).
Just bear in mind that, at this early stage, worksheets are not that effective. Make it mostly oral. Some cut and paste activities are also good, but you have to help with the written English you may have (like this one http://teacherslove.blogs.sapo.pt/22377.html - by the way, the blog is mine ;) ).
Some good websites:
I hope this helps.
If you need anything specific, just let me know. I ve been teaching kids for several years and have lots of material.
