Hi all, I have been asked to put a pack together for a student who loses concentration in class and disrupts the lesson. He loses heart because he can t really read. He can recognise the letters of the alphabet and copy. He can sometimes put the missing letter in. He can sometimes match up word and picture, but that doesn t take long! He has been referred to an ed psych. In the meantime, I need to provide this pack of resources that he will be able (in theory) to get on with while his classmates are doing more advanced work. He is 14 and has been learning English with minimal success for 3 years. I am at a complete loss. Any resources out there? Any ideas? |

I have a lot of students with learning disabilities. It is very difficult to pay them the attention they need, I usually provide them with a dossier with very easy activities, like copying from examples. I work vocabulary with them, very little grammar. I uploaded some worksheets here, you can have them a look. Send me a private message if you are interested and I can send you some of my worksheets. When I go to the computers room, they work with the following website: http://acacia.pntic.mec.es/agip0002/auro/inicio.html . There are different levels in this website, but they do the lexicon level. Youn can check the index to find it. I hope it is useful for you. |

Since he can t read, maybe he can focus on his listening skills. http://www.eslprintables.com/powerpoint.asp?id=49254#thetop does not require much reading |

Start with a visual dictionary to build some vocabulary. Leave some spaces so he can decide on some words he wants to learn too, not just the vocabulary you give him. Teach him how to use a dictionary - that way he can look up native language words & write down the English -you could use this in conjunction with his making his own dictionary. I ll add a few more ideas (& I ll try to find some resources, too) after my working day is through. The most difficult things willbe toprovide something age appropriate & that willencourage hismotivation to do the work.It s so important that he doesnt feel overly embarrassed, or he ll just be disruptive. Cheers, AB
You might find some useful things here: (Ill add more as I locate them)

Id also try to find him some reading material that would interest him. Maybe something like a choose your own adventure style of book. You may need to give him a glossary, or a wordliist & dictionary. Something sort of like these books:
