take the cap off the pen / put the cap on the pen
or can/ uncap the pen

BE is lid, not cap.  But nowadays, most everyday pens are retractable (click or twist) and dont have lids.
Correct: Take the lid off the pen / put the lid (back) on the pen
However, both lid and cap are used for whiteboard markers and coloured markers in Australia.

AE is cap.
The first is more natural, I guess the second (cap/uncap) isn t wrong, but it sounds a little awkward.
