which form is correct?
|
Kindly tell me which is correct If I ask my students to change this sentence into a question. Which form is right? I am a teacher. : The answer is Am I a teacher ? Or Are you a teacher? Sorry if it seems silly to ask this question |

Yes, it could seem silly, but a little thought makes it clear why you would have to ask this. Since you are changing the sentence, the sense of it has to be the same, so the answer would be "Am I a teacher?". Bruce |

It depends if you want to "turn the sentence into a question" : - Am I a teacher? or if you want to "find the question": - Are you a teacher? Finding the question is usually based on a conversation where you have a least 2 persons to ask a question and give an answer. This is the big difference between "turning into" and "finding". |

I allow my students to do either one, but make sure I explain why it is okay to switch to second person (more natural/commonly used) |

I also let my students to use both forms but I make sure to explain that using you comes more naturally in spoken language |
