HI,

EXCITED because here a passive adjective is needed.

The children are excited because the box is close and they are impatient to open it.

If you say EXCITING the meaning is different : The children are EXCITING the dog to make it bark OR This book is very EXCITING and I am greatly interestED in the story, I can t leave it until I will have read the last word !

With EXCITED you are Under the power of excitement and with EXCITING you are the source of excitement.

Is my explanation clear enough ?

Hugs.

When I introduce this grammar point to my lower level students, I over-simplify it a bit, but for basic learners it seems to work more often than not.

I tell them that an activity is Exciting, Tiring, Boring, etc. (ING)

I tell them that people feel Excited, Tired, Bored, etc. (ED)

Usually they get the idea. It helps, until their own grasp of language is clear enough to discern the difference between active and passive.   They see the patterns, I ask them what is different, and usually they can explain the difference.

The parade was exciting
The climb to the top of the mounting was tiring.
The president s speech was boring

I was excited when I watched the parade/
I was tired after I climbed the mountain
I was bored while I listened to the president s speech.

Hope this helps.

confession:
Once in a while my students will exclaim: "I am boring!!!"
I don t correct them, I just say: "Indeed you are, you are very boring! "

It is my private joke.
Sometimes, other students will get the joke and have a laugh with me.
Only when we get to the point in the curriculum where we learn the difference between the two words, I will use their sentence as an example....

(*** insert wicked laugh here****)
