You can ask: How is pizza made? --> It s made by putting tomato sauce and other toppings on top of dough, then baking it in an oven. What is pizza made of? --> It s made of dough, tomato sauce and other toppings. But I think the second question would be better as What is pizza made from? "Made of" suggests a material like metal, wood etc., whereas "made from" suggests ingredients. |

"Made of" does not necessarily imply a material like wood, metal etc. What are little girls made of? What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice. That s what little girls are made of. What are little boys made of? What are little boys made of? Snips and snails and puppy dog s tails. That s what little boys are made of.

As I explained fairly recently, "made of" is usually used when the material is still discernable in the finished product (My shoes are made of leather) and "made from" is usually used when the materials have been blended together, such as the ingredients in a cooked dish like pizza. So FrauSue is right that we would usually say that pizza is made from flour, tomato sauce, cheese, etc. Mary is also right that "made of" can have a more figurative use. Bruce |
