passive sentence with start
|
Hi all! I need your help. Can the verb start be made passive in the following sentence: Since the 1800s groups of people have started organized movements to try to make the dream of peace a reality. A colleague of mine said that this verb can not be used in the passive form. I personally checked my oxford encyclopedic dictionary and found no passive sentence in the dictionary entery of this word. thx in advance

In your example, I think the verb can be used in passive as it has an object "organized movements" In English there are no strict rules there are always exceptions. |

To try to make the dream of peace a reality organized movements have been started since the 1800s.
I think that it is right grammaticaly but it may sound a little bit strange... Let s wait for native s opinions...
I would rather say : organized movements started in the 1800s ... OR movements have been organized since the 1800s... |

I don t think there is anything wrong with "Organized movements have been started..." |
