The text says
When the installation showed in Japan last year, a noose hung over the bed. It is gone now, partly because Emin said she does not "feel like the noose anymore" and partly for health and safety regulations--concern that some deranged student would try to go out with a bang at the Tate, Emin explained.

slavchik, First, when you ask about an expression, be careful to enter it correctly, so people know just what you need.. Notice that your original post said "go with the bang" rather than "go out with a bang". Anyway, to go out with a bang means to leave (in this case, to leave life by suicide) in a very memorable way Bruce |

Hi slavchik
It means that there was concern that a student was going to do something that would make a big impression on people via a negative act, something that people would remember for a very long time.
Usually, go out with a bang is associated with positive events but because the author used the words concerned and deranged, the implication is that the event will be a negative one.
For further explanation, see these links below. The first link is very good in regards to negative impressions and it is peoples replies rather than stock standard dictionary definitions.
A recent example of someone going out with a bang is German pilot Lubitz who deliberately crashed his plane. He apparently told his girlfriend that he was going to go out with a bang.
Cheers
Jayho
Edit: Bruce, our posts crossed

More likely someone would mess up the installation by trying to get a selfie with their head in the noose. :-) This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper. We re all getting very cheerful now aren t we? Nooses, multiple murder/suicide and the end of the world.... I vote for a change of topic! Tap |
