What does assy-thingummy mean?
Don t ask him what an assy-thingummy is. He s only longing to be asked. Say nothing and perhaps he will go away. |

I didn t know what it was, either! A thingummy or thingummy-jig means an unspecified thing - something or other. Assy-thingummy, never heard of it, so I googled it. This link explains it.

Regarding the link provided, in the example, the assy part refers to the word assonance and so he is basically saying - don t ask about that strange word assonance , he s dying to tell you about it. (This basically means / implies that he purposefully used a word that few people know and the other speaker knows that he likes to show off how smart he is.)

In case you re not completely clear on this, Eustace used the word "assonance" and Edmund didn t know the word, so she couldn t repeat it, so he said "assy-thingummy" which is an attempt to repeat the word, but admitting that he couldn t so he used a common term for "whatever" as the rest of the word. He could have said "asso-whatever" or "asso-something-or-other" instead. Bruce |
