how to say in English....

Hi all,

One student of mine wrote in an essay for the FCE the following sentence:"Nowadays, there is a big debate about if it is better buying in a shop or online." I ve corrected his mistakes "Nowadays, there is a heated debate about whether it is better to buy in a shop or online." My question is: Is there any other way of expressing the idea of "there is a heated debate" either in a formal or informal way? The only one I can think of is :"buying online or in a shop is a hot / burning topic / issue".
Thanks in advance.
