What does he want to say?

Dear All, One of my students wrote this sentence (this cames from his presenttion on global warming): Coal burning power plants release enotmous amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. For example, 40%of U.S. CO2. Do you have any idea what he wants to say ? Many thanks , Have a good day ;-) |

Does he mean that the USA emits 40% of the total CO2 emissions? So, 40% of the world s CO2 emissions come from the USA. I m not sure if my phrasing is very good, either!

I think it s more likely to mean that coal-burning (the hyphen is necessary) power plants emit 40% of the CO2 that is emitted in the US. Bruce |

Coal-burning power plants release enormous amounts of carbon dioxide into the air.
Not sure if the word in question was the spelling of enormous, but I would also have to concure with Bruce with regards to the hyphen. |
