legumes?

Dear colleagues, time to ask for help... 1. I don t eat much legumes? or 2. I don t eat many legumes? Is it C or U? And also: in the second sentence am I referring to the amount of food or to the variety of it? How does it sound? I think the writer s intention was to speak about the quantity, and not the variety. Thanks a lot Chiara |

In the US, at least, we would use "many" in either case. Bruce |

I agree with Bruce. Quantity: I don t eat many legumes. or I don t eat many servings of legumes. Variety: I don t eat many legumes. or I don t eat many kinds of legumes. |

I wouldn t use the word "legumes." I would say "I don t eat many pulses" or "I seldom eat pulses." |

But not all legumes are pulses. Bruce |

Learned something new today! I d never heard the word "pulse" used in reference to vegetables before. This is also an indication that "pulse" is much less common than "legumes" and it would probably be better to go with "legumes". Cheers, Douglas |

I do a lot of cooking, Douglas, so I know about pulses. I love lentils. Bruce |
